Boardwalk Block Guide

Announcement Block

Everything you need to set up and customize the Announcement block — a simple, versatile text block used inside the Announcement Bar to share promotions, store updates, and important messages with your visitors.

About

An announcement is a short message displayed at the top of your store, typically used to highlight sales, promotions, free shipping thresholds, new arrivals, or any other information you want every visitor to see right away. Because it sits above your main navigation, it's one of the first things customers notice when they land on your site.

In the Boardwalk theme, the Announcement block is a text block that lives inside the Announcement Bar section. It uses a rich text editor, so you can write plain text, add bold or italic styling, and include clickable links — all without touching any code. You can add multiple Announcement blocks to the Announcement Bar to display several messages at once, and the text automatically adjusts its size on smaller screens for a clean look on every device.

How to Set Up the Announcement Block

Follow these steps to add an Announcement block to your store's Announcement Bar using the Boardwalk theme.

1
Open the Theme Editor

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, find Boardwalk, and click Customize.

2
Locate the Announcement Bar Section

In the Theme Editor sidebar, look for the Announcement Bar section near the top of the section list. If you don't see it, click Add section and search for Announcement Bar to add it to your layout.

3
Add an Announcement Block

Click Add block inside the Announcement Bar section and choose Announcement from the list. A new block will appear with an empty text field ready for your message.

4
Write Your Announcement Message

Click on the Announcement block in the sidebar to open its settings. Use the Text field to type your message (e.g., "Free shipping on orders over $50" or "Summer Sale — 20% off sitewide"). You can use the rich text toolbar to add bold, italic, or link formatting.

5
Add More Announcements (Optional)

Repeat Step 3 to add additional Announcement blocks. You can add as many as you need and reorder them by dragging blocks up or down in the sidebar. You can also mix Announcement blocks with other block types available in the Announcement Bar, such as the Announcement with Timer or Marquee blocks.

6
Save and Preview

Click Save in the Theme Editor. Preview your store to verify the announcement text is displaying correctly at the top of your page.

The Announcement block has one setting. Click on the block in the Theme Editor sidebar to access it.

Text

The message displayed in the announcement bar. This is a rich text field, so you can use bold, italic, and link formatting. You can also add empty paragraphs to create visual spacing between lines. Links added here will appear underlined and remove the underline on hover.

Styling and Behavior

The Announcement block's appearance is controlled by a combination of its own behavior and the parent Announcement Bar section settings. Here's how key aspects of the block work.

How the Block Looks and Behaves

Text styling

Announcement text is displayed in uppercase using your theme's body font. The text is centered and rendered at a slightly reduced opacity for a subtle, refined appearance.

Font size

The text size is controlled by the Font size setting on the parent Announcement Bar section, not on the block itself. All Announcement blocks within the same Announcement Bar share this font size.

Responsive sizing

On mobile devices, the font size is automatically reduced so the announcement text fits comfortably on smaller screens. The amount of reduction scales proportionally — larger font sizes shrink more to keep text readable without overflowing.

Link behavior

Any links you add through the rich text editor will appear underlined. When a visitor hovers over a link, the underline is removed for a clean interactive feel.

Colors

The text and background colors are inherited from the color scheme assigned to the parent Announcement Bar section. To change the announcement colors, select a different color scheme on the Announcement Bar section settings.

Line spacing

Adding an empty paragraph in the rich text editor creates vertical space between lines. This can be useful if you want to visually separate two pieces of information within the same block.

Note: The Announcement Bar section controls settings such as font size, color scheme, and padding that affect all blocks inside it, including Announcement blocks. To adjust these, click the Announcement Bar section heading in the Theme Editor sidebar.

Other Announcement Bar Blocks

The Announcement Bar section supports several block types beyond the standard Announcement block. These can be mixed and matched to create a more dynamic header experience.

Announcement with Timer

Displays an announcement alongside a live countdown timer. Ideal for limited-time sales, product launches, or event deadlines. You can configure the target date, time zone, and whether to apply daylight saving time. A demo mode is also available that starts a 2-hour countdown for testing purposes.

Marquee

A continuously scrolling text banner that moves horizontally across the announcement bar. You can control the scroll speed, direction, gap between repeated items, and apply an optional gradient fade effect at the edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

The font size is not set on the Announcement block itself. Instead, click the Announcement Bar section heading in the Theme Editor sidebar and adjust the Font size setting there. This size applies to all blocks inside the Announcement Bar.
Yes. The Text field uses a rich text editor that includes a link tool. Highlight the text you want to turn into a link, click the link icon in the toolbar, and paste in the URL. The link will appear underlined and the underline will disappear on hover.
This is by design. The Announcement block automatically transforms all text to uppercase to match the visual style of the announcement bar. You don't need to type your text in all caps — the theme handles the styling for you.
Colors are controlled at the section level, not the block level. Click on the Announcement Bar section in the Theme Editor sidebar and change the Color scheme setting. The color schemes available are the ones you've defined in your theme's global settings under Theme settings → Colors.
Yes. You can add multiple Announcement blocks to the Announcement Bar section. Each block will appear in the bar, and you can reorder them by dragging blocks in the sidebar. You can also combine standard Announcement blocks with other block types like the Announcement with Timer or Marquee.
