Everything you need to set up and customize the Marquee block — from adding scrolling text and logos to controlling animation speed, direction, and appearance.
A marquee is a strip of content that continuously scrolls horizontally across the page. It's commonly used to draw attention to announcements, brand names, partner logos, or short promotional messages in an eye-catching, animated way.
In the Boardwalk theme, the Marquee block displays your content in an infinite scrolling loop powered by a lightweight animation. You can fill it with text, logos, social media icons, or images with text — and the block will duplicate your content automatically to create a seamless, continuous scroll. The animation speed, direction, spacing, and visual style are all customizable from the Theme Editor.
Follow these steps to add and configure a Marquee on any page of your Shopify store using the Boardwalk theme.
In your Shopify admin, go to
Online Store → Themes, find Boardwalk,
and click Customize. Navigate to the page
where you want to display the marquee using the page
selector dropdown at the top center of the editor.
Click Add block (or Add section, depending on where you want to place it) and choose Marquee from the list. The block will appear on your page with placeholder content.
The Marquee works as a container — you fill it by adding blocks inside it. Click into the Marquee in the sidebar and use Add block to insert one or more of the following content types:
Tip: Add several blocks of the same type (for example, multiple text blocks with different phrases) to create a varied scrolling strip. The marquee will loop all of your blocks seamlessly.
Click the Marquee block itself in the sidebar (not one of its child blocks). From here you can adjust the animation speed, scroll direction, spacing between items, text style, font size, and the optional gradient fade effect. See the Block Settings section below for full details.
Click Save in the Theme Editor. Preview your page to verify the marquee scrolls smoothly and displays your content as expected.
These settings are available when you click the Marquee block in the Theme Editor sidebar. They control the animation, typography, and visual appearance of the scrolling strip.
Controls how fast the content scrolls across the screen. Lower values produce a slower, more relaxed scroll; higher values create faster movement. Range: 1x to 30x.
Sets which direction the content scrolls. Options:
Forward (scrolls from right to left) or
Reverse (scrolls from left to right).
Sets the horizontal spacing between each item in the scrolling strip. Range: 0px to 120px.
Chooses the font family used for text content inside the
marquee. Options: Heading (uses your
theme's heading font) or Body (uses your
theme's body font).
Sets the size of text inside the marquee on desktop screens. The font size is automatically scaled down slightly on mobile devices for a balanced look. Range: 20px to 80px.
When enabled, a soft gradient overlay fades the content from transparent at the left and right edges to fully visible in the center. This creates a polished look where items appear to gently emerge and disappear rather than being cut off at the edges.
The Marquee block acts as a container. You populate it by adding one or more of the following content blocks inside it. Each block becomes an item in the scrolling strip.
Adds a simple text element to the marquee. Use this for short phrases, announcements, taglines, or promotional messages. The text will inherit the font family and font size you configure in the Marquee's Text settings.
Displays an image — typically a brand or partner logo. This is ideal for "as seen in" or "trusted by" strips where you want to showcase collaborators, press mentions, or certification badges.
Adds your store's social media icons into the scrolling strip. The icons are pulled from the social links you've already configured in your theme settings.
Note: Social icons are driven by the
social media links set in your theme settings. To add
or update these links, go to
Online Store → Themes → Customize →
Theme settings → Social media
in your Shopify admin.
Combines an image and a text label side by side. This is useful for pairing a small icon or photo with a caption, such as a product icon with its name or a certification badge with a description.
The Marquee block comes with features that work automatically — no apps or custom code needed.
The marquee automatically duplicates your content to create a continuous, never-ending scroll with no visible gap or jump. Visitors see a smooth, unbroken strip of content no matter how many items you add.
The scrolling animation automatically pauses when a visitor hovers their cursor over the marquee. This makes it easy for visitors to read text or examine logos without the content moving away.
If a visitor has enabled the "reduce motion" setting in their operating system or browser, the marquee animation will not play. This ensures your store is accessible and comfortable for visitors who are sensitive to motion.
On mobile devices, the animation runs at double the speed compared to desktop. Because mobile screens are narrower, this keeps the content moving at a pace that feels natural and consistent across all screen sizes.
Text inside the marquee is automatically scaled down on mobile screens so it fits comfortably without overflowing. The scaling is proportional to the desktop font size you set, so your design stays balanced.
When the marquee first scrolls into view, its content fades in gently using the theme's built-in scroll animation system. This creates a polished, intentional appearance as visitors scroll down the page.
