Boardwalk Block Guide

Text Block

Everything you need to add and customize the Text block — from choosing a font style and adjusting size to controlling line height and spacing.

About

A Text block is one of the most fundamental building blocks in any Shopify theme. It lets you place a passage of written content — such as a heading, a paragraph, a tagline, or a description — anywhere a section supports blocks.

In the Boardwalk theme, the Text block gives you rich text editing with full control over the font style, font size, line height, and vertical spacing. Because the block supports rich text, you can add bold, italic, links, and other formatting directly inside the editor. The Text block is available as a content block across many different sections, making it one of the most versatile tools for building your pages.

How to Add a Text Block

Follow these steps to add and configure a Text block in your Shopify store using the Boardwalk theme.

1
Open the Theme Editor

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, find Boardwalk, and click Customize. Use the page selector dropdown at the top center of the editor to navigate to the page you want to edit.

2
Find a Section That Supports Blocks

The Text block is available inside many sections throughout the Boardwalk theme. Click on a section in the sidebar that accepts content blocks — for example, a heading group, a content column, or a product page section.

3
Add the Text Block

Click Add block inside the section or group, then choose Text from the list. A new Text block will appear in the sidebar with placeholder content.

4
Enter Your Text

Click the Text block in the sidebar to open its settings. Type or paste your content into the Text field. This is a rich text editor, so you can format your text with bold, italic, links, and lists.

5
Choose a Font Style and Size

Use the Text style dropdown to select a font family, then adjust the Font size slider. The available size range changes depending on which text style you select (see the Settings Reference below for details).

6
Adjust Spacing (Optional)

Fine-tune the vertical spacing above and below the text using the Padding top and Padding bottom sliders under the Padding header. This is useful for controlling the distance between this block and adjacent blocks.

7
Save and Preview

Click Save in the Theme Editor. Preview your page to verify the text is displaying with the correct style, size, and spacing.

Text Block Settings

Text

The main content of the block. This is a rich text field, so you can use bold, italic, links, lists, and other formatting directly in the editor.

Text style

Controls which font family is used for the text. Options: Heading, Body, Caption, or Menu. Each option uses the corresponding font you've configured in your theme's typography settings. Changing this also determines the available range for the Font size slider.

Font size

Sets the size of the text in pixels. The available range depends on the selected text style: Heading supports 20px–80px, Body supports 12px–60px, Caption supports 10px–60px, and Menu supports 12px–60px. The slider adjusts in 2px steps.

Line height

Controls the vertical space between lines of text. Range: 1.0 to 2.0 (in 0.1 increments). Lower values make lines tighter, while higher values add more breathing room between lines.

Padding top

Adds spacing above the text block. Range: 0px to 36px (in 2px steps). On mobile devices, this value is automatically reduced to 75% of the desktop value.

Padding bottom

Adds spacing below the text block. Range: 0px to 36px (in 2px steps). On mobile devices, this value is automatically reduced to 75% of the desktop value.

Key Details

Important things to know about how the Text block works in the Boardwalk theme.

Font Style and Your Theme Typography

The four text style options — Heading, Body, Caption, and Menu — correspond to the fonts you've set up in your theme's global typography settings. For example, if you've chosen a serif font for your headings, selecting Heading as the text style will use that same serif font. This ensures your Text blocks stay visually consistent with the rest of your store.

Note: To change which fonts are available for each text style, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Typography in your Shopify admin.

Dynamic Font Size Ranges

The Font size slider changes its range based on the selected text style. For instance, the Heading style supports larger sizes (up to 80px) since headings are typically used for prominent display text. The Caption style starts at a smaller minimum (10px) because captions are often used for fine print or supplementary information. Only the slider that matches your selected text style is visible in the editor — the others stay hidden to keep the settings clean and simple.

Responsive Padding

The padding values you set are for desktop screens. On mobile devices, the theme automatically scales both the top and bottom padding to 75% of your chosen value. For example, if you set 24px of top padding, mobile visitors will see 18px. This keeps spacing proportional on smaller screens without requiring you to set mobile values separately.

Rich Text Formatting

The Text field uses Shopify's built-in rich text editor. You can format your content with bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, links, ordered and unordered lists, and more — all without writing any code. This makes the Text block suitable for everything from a short tagline to a longer descriptive paragraph.

Block Availability

The Text block is a universal content block in the Boardwalk theme. It appears in the Content category when adding blocks, and is available inside most sections that support blocks — including heading groups, content columns, product page groups, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each text style has its own font size slider with a range tailored to that style's typical use. For example, the Heading style supports up to 80px because headings are usually large and prominent, while the Caption style starts as low as 10px for smaller supporting text. The theme only shows the slider that matches your current text style selection to keep the settings panel uncluttered.
The text style options use the fonts defined in your theme's global typography settings. To change them, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → Theme settings → Typography in your Shopify admin. Any changes you make there will automatically apply to all Text blocks using that style.
Yes. The Text field uses Shopify's rich text editor, which supports bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, links, and lists. You can format your content directly in the editor without needing to write any code.
Yes, this is by design. The Boardwalk theme automatically reduces the top and bottom padding to 75% of your desktop values on mobile screens. This keeps spacing proportional on smaller devices without requiring separate mobile settings.
Not every section supports every block type. The Text block is available in most sections that accept content blocks, but some specialized sections may not include it. Try adding it inside a different section or group on the same page. If you're looking for a section that supports flexible text content, sections with heading groups or content columns are a good starting point.
