Boardwalk Theme Settings Guide

Social Icons

Everything you need to add social media links to your Boardwalk store — from entering your profile URLs for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to understanding where social icons appear across the theme.

About

Social icons are clickable links to your brand's social media profiles. They give customers a quick way to find and follow you on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and more. Displaying social links on your store builds trust, encourages engagement, and helps grow your audience across channels.

In the Boardwalk theme, the Social Icons settings are found under Theme Settings and act as a central place to enter your profile URLs. You only need to add each link once — the theme automatically displays the matching platform icon wherever social links are shown, such as the footer, mobile menu drawer, or any section with a Show social media links option. Only platforms with a URL entered will display an icon.

How to Set Up Social Icons

Follow these steps to add your social media profile links to your store.

1
Open Theme Settings

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes, find Boardwalk, and click Customize. In the Theme Editor, click the gear icon (⚙) in the left sidebar to open Theme settings.

2
Navigate to Social Icons

Inside Theme settings, click on Social icons. You'll see a list of URL fields — one for each supported platform.

3
Enter Your Profile URLs

For each platform your brand is active on, paste the full URL to your profile page. For example, https://www.instagram.com/yourbrand or https://www.facebook.com/yourbrand. Leave any platforms you don't use blank — they won't display an icon.

Tip: Always use the full URL including https://. Entering just a username or handle (like @yourbrand) won't work — the link needs to be a complete web address that visitors can click to open directly.

4
Enable Social Links on Sections

After entering your URLs, navigate to any section where you want social icons to appear (such as the footer). Look for a Show social media links toggle in that section's settings and turn it on. The theme will automatically display icons for every platform that has a URL entered.

5
Save and Preview

Click Save in the Theme Editor. Preview your store and check the footer, mobile menu, or any section you've enabled social links on to verify the correct icons appear and that clicking them opens the right profile pages.

Supported Platforms

Boardwalk includes built-in icon support for 12 social media platforms, plus a generic option for any platform not in the list. Each platform gets its own URL field — only platforms with a URL entered will show an icon.

Where Social Icons Appear

Once you've entered your profile URLs, social icons can be displayed in several areas of the theme. Each area has its own toggle to show or hide the icons.

Common Locations

Footer

The footer is the most common place to display social icons. Look for the Show social media links option within your footer section or footer blocks. The icons appear as part of your footer layout, typically near your brand information or navigation links.

Mobile menu drawer

Social icons can be displayed inside the mobile menu drawer footer, giving visitors on phones and tablets easy access to your social profiles while navigating your store.

Password page

If your store is password-protected (for example, before launch), social icons can appear on the password page so visitors can follow you on social media while your store is being set up.

Custom sections

Various sections and blocks throughout the theme may include a Show social media links toggle. When enabled, they pull the icons directly from the URLs you've entered here. The appearance — including icon size, spacing, and color — is controlled by each section's own settings.

Important Notes

Keep these details in mind when setting up social icons.

Things to Know

Only filled fields show icons

The theme only displays icons for platforms that have a URL entered. Leave a field blank to hide that platform's icon entirely. There's no separate on/off toggle per platform — the presence or absence of a URL controls visibility.

Enter once, display everywhere

You only need to enter each social link once in these theme settings. Every section and block that displays social icons pulls from this same set of URLs. If you update a link here, it updates everywhere automatically.

Use full URLs

Each field expects a complete web address starting with https://. Entering just a username, handle, or partial URL won't create a working link.

Icon appearance is section-controlled

The visual style of social icons — including size, color, spacing, and opacity — is controlled by each individual section or block where the icons appear, not by these theme settings. Look for settings like Icon size, Icon color, and Space between icons on the relevant section.

Follow on Shop button

Some sections also offer a Follow on Shop button alongside social icons. This is a Shopify feature separate from social links — it requires the Shop channel to be installed and Shop Pay to be activated in your Shopify admin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Entering a URL here makes the icon available, but the section where you want it to appear must also have Show social media links turned on. Check the section's settings — such as the footer or mobile menu drawer — and make sure that toggle is enabled. Also verify that you entered a complete URL starting with https://.
Yes. Use the Other field to add a link to any platform not explicitly listed — such as Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, or your own website. A generic link icon will be displayed for this entry. Note that only one "Other" link is supported.
Simply clear the URL from the corresponding field and save. The icon for that platform will no longer appear anywhere on your store. There's no separate toggle — removing the URL is all you need to do.
Yes, but not from these settings. The icon size, color, spacing, and opacity are controlled by the individual section or block where the icons are displayed. For example, your footer section may have Icon size, Icon color, and Space between icons settings. Check the section's own settings to adjust the appearance.
Yes. Social media links open in a new browser tab by default, so customers aren't taken away from your store when they click on a social icon.
The social icons display in the order they appear in the theme settings list: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr, Vimeo, and Other. This order is fixed and cannot be rearranged through the Theme Editor.
