Wix and Tropic Arts promise the same thing: a professional website you can build and run yourself, without hiring a developer. They get there in different ways. Wix gives you a free-form editor, a big toolbox and an app store for everything else. Tropic Arts gives you a finished, designer-made site, has AI write every page of it for your business, and builds the store, bookings, email and customer list into one console.
We make Tropic Arts, so read this with that in mind. We've tried hard to be fair. Every detail about Wix below comes from Wix's own website and help center, checked on September 26, 2026, and we say plainly where Wix is the better choice. There are several places where it is.
The short answer
Wix is the better fit if you want to place every element exactly where you like, add custom code or an app for almost anything, sell in person or on marketplaces, publish your site in more than one language, or reach support by phone at any hour.
Tropic Arts is the better fit if you'd rather start from a complete, multi-page site a designer already laid out, have AI write all of it for your business, and run your store, bookings, newsletter, customer list and a mailbox from one place for less each month. You can also change templates later without starting over. The trade is that you work within a template's sections instead of on a free-form canvas, and there's no app store to fill the gaps.
The rest of this article explains both answers, starting with the whole comparison in one table.

What you'll pay
Tropic Arts has two plans. Starter is $15 a month billed yearly ($180 a year), or $25 month to month, for a site that doesn't sell online. Store is $25 a month billed yearly ($300 a year), or $35 month to month, and adds the online store. Neither has a setup fee, and we take no cut of your sales. Payments run through your own Stripe account, so you pay Stripe's fees directly and nothing on top to us.
Both plans include hosting, SSL, the AI builder and editor, the AI logo designer, 5,000 email sends a month, one mailbox on your domain, and room for up to 25 people on your team. Domains are the one thing sold separately. You can register a new one in your console or connect one you already own.
Wix's cheapest plan that puts your site on your own domain is Light, at $17 a month billed yearly, but Light can't accept payments. To take any money online, including bookings and memberships, you need Core at $29 a month, or Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159 above it. Those are yearly prices, paid up front; Wix doesn't publish its month-to-month prices, which appear at checkout. A new yearly plan comes with a voucher for a free domain for the first year, after which it renews at Wix's regular price. Wix lists no fee on store sales beyond card processing, but memberships and packages sold through its Pricing Plans app carry a 4% fee on Core and 2% on Business.
Two differences are worth knowing before you compare totals. First, Wix has a free plan: your site goes live on a Wix address, with Wix ads. Tropic Arts has no free plan for a live site. Instead, every site starts on a free trial with no card and no time limit, so you can build the whole site and preview it privately for as long as you like, then pick a plan when you're ready to go live. Second, several things that cost extra on Wix are included with Tropic Arts. Wix sells business email as Google Workspace, from $7 per user per month. Its free email marketing allowance is 200 emails a month, with paid email plans beyond that. And seats run from two collaborators on Light to five on Core.
So for a small business that sells online, it's $25 a month against $29 before any add-ons. Add one Google Workspace mailbox and the Wix side comes to $36. To be fair to Wix, Google Workspace is a full suite with Gmail, Calendar and Drive, and if your business already runs on it, you may keep it either way. Ours is a mailbox that lives in your console, next to your orders and bookings. For a site that doesn't sell, it's $15 against $17.
Getting your site built: templates and AI
Wix's library has more than 2,000 templates, all free, and like ours they come with inner pages and sample content. Wix also has three editors, and which one you start in matters. The newest, Wix Harmony, arrived in January 2026 with an AI assistant called Aria built in. Describe your business and Aria generates the site's pages, layout, colors, text and images, and then you keep refining it by chatting. Chatting with Aria doesn't use AI credits. The classic Wix Editor has AI tools for writing text and adding sections, but no open-ended chat, and a site can't move from one Wix editor to another. For logos, Wix sends you to Wixel, its separate AI design app, where a free account covers about 20 logos a month.
Tropic Arts has a smaller library of 60-plus templates, and every one was designed in-house for a particular kind of business: a plumber, a nail studio, a law firm, a winery, a veterinary hospital. Each arrives as a whole site. They average about seven pages, such as about, services and contact pages plus the legal pages, with sample content that shows what each section is for.
That's where the AI builder starts. You tell it about your business (your name, what you do, where you are, your hours and how people reach you), and it writes every page of the template for you, up to twelve of them, along with the header and footer. Your phone number and email address end up in the right links, and your hours in the right place. When it's done you're in the editor, where you can keep talking to it. Ask it to rewrite a section in a warmer voice, add a section about your warranty, or tighten the services page. Each change is a draft you preview before anything goes live, and you can publish several pages at once.
The AI helps with design too. It can suggest a color palette and apply it across the site, and the AI logo designer sketches three logo directions from a short chat, refines the one you pick, and gives you a dark version and a favicon to go with it.
Here's the honest difference. Wix's AI generates the layout and the pictures along with the words. Ours writes within a template a designer has already laid out, and it writes words, not photos: the template's pictures stay until you upload your own. We think starting from a designed template is a strength, because the result looks designed rather than assembled, but it does mean your site's structure starts from one of ours. Our AI is also metered where Wix's chat isn't. Each request counts as one AI action: the trial includes 40, Starter 100 a month and Store 150 a month, and you can buy 50 more for $10 whenever you need them.
Design freedom: where Wix is ahead
This is the biggest difference between the two, and it's worth being clear about.
Wix's editors are free-form. In the classic Wix Editor you can drag any element to any spot on the page, set its exact position, layer it over something else and adjust the layout separately for mobile. Harmony gives you drag and drop too, with layout guides. If that isn't enough, you can embed HTML on a Wix site and, once it's on a paid plan with your own domain, add custom code to its pages. The classic editor and Wix Studio, Wix's editor for designers and agencies, also support Velo, a platform for building your own features in JavaScript. Harmony doesn't, so on Wix it's worth deciding at the start whether you want the AI chat or the code.
Tropic Arts works in sections. You can change any word, swap any photo, drag sections into a new order, add or remove them, recolor the whole site in a click, and choose your heading and body fonts from a list of thirty. What you can't do is place an element anywhere you like, edit the HTML or CSS, or paste in code or a widget from another service. Every template is built to look right on phones, tablets and desktops without extra work from you, and the section model is how we keep that promise. It's also a real limit. If you know you'll want to go beyond it, Wix is the better tool.
If you want to nudge a button a few pixels to the left, Wix is the better tool. If you'd rather never have to, that's the case for Tropic Arts.
Changing templates later is one place where Tropic Arts is ahead. Wix doesn't let you switch an existing site to a different template: you start a new site and copy your pages across, and some things can't come with you, including your store, bookings and contacts. Harmony softens this by letting you restyle the whole site with a new brand kit. On Tropic Arts, you can try any of our other templates on a private sandbox copy of your site. Your products, journal posts, locations, and matching text and images carry over, while page layouts, navigation and section colors start fresh from the new design. Pages the new template doesn't have aren't carried across, so expect a little tidying. When it looks right, you apply it to the live site. Your domain, email, payments, customers and orders stay as they were, and a backup of the old site is saved first.
Running your business from one console
Both platforms go well beyond a website, and on paper they cover much of the same ground. The difference is in how it's packaged.
On Tropic Arts, the business tools are part of the platform itself, in the same console as your site:
- Online store (Store plan). Products and inventory, categories and filters, discount codes, shipping rates, local pickup, sales tax through Stripe Tax, and orders, refunds and fulfillment.
- Digital products and subscriptions (Store plan). Downloads and license keys delivered the moment a payment clears, and memberships or subscription boxes that bill on a schedule.
- Reviews (Store plan). A few days after an order is fulfilled, the customer gets an email asking for a review, and by default reviews wait for your approval before they appear.
- Bookings (every plan). Clients request appointments on your site, you confirm them, and they land on a calendar that syncs with Apple, Google or Outlook.
- Email (every paid plan). A blog, a newsletter signup, and campaigns that carry your logo, with 5,000 sends a month included.
- Customers and inbox. Everyone who buys, books or signs up lands in one customer list, and email arrives in a shared inbox. Your mailbox on your own domain is set up at inbox.yourdomain.com by default, so it can't disturb email you already have, or you can move it to the main domain.
- Your team. Invite up to 25 people to a site on any plan, each with one of five roles, from owner to view-only.
Wix covers most of this with its own apps: Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, Pricing Plans for memberships, Wix Email Marketing, an inbox and Wix Reviews. In places it goes further. Wix Bookings can take payment online when a client books, including a deposit, which ours can't: our bookings are requests you confirm, and you take payment your usual way. Wix's team roles are more detailed too, with presets for store managers, bookings staff and blog writers, plus custom roles of your own; ours are five presets. Where Wix asks for more is in what's extra: business email, email marketing past the free allowance, the fee on memberships, and seats beyond your plan's limit.
Apps, languages and selling everywhere
This is Wix's other big advantage. The Wix App Market has hundreds of apps (Wix's help center puts the count at more than 800), so if Wix doesn't do something itself, there's usually an app that does. Wix also offers multilingual sites through its free Wix Multilingual app, which includes 3,000 words of automatic translation, though it isn't available in the Harmony editor. There's a point-of-sale system for selling in person, where card payments at the counter need Wix's hardware and a $19-a-month POS plan, and there are tools for selling through Google, TikTok, Amazon and eBay on the Core plan and up. For payments, US stores can choose Wix Payments, PayPal, Stripe, Square and many others.
Tropic Arts has no app store and no plugins. What's built in is what you get, plus a short list of connections: Stripe for payments, Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel for tracking, calendar sync, maps, and verification for Google Search Console. We don't offer multilingual sites, point of sale, marketplace selling or PayPal. If your business depends on any of those, Wix is the better choice today, and we'd rather you know that before you start than after.
Hosting, backups, privacy and support
Both platforms handle hosting, security and updates, and both include SSL, so your site loads over HTTPS without you touching a setting. Both take care of the search basics too: page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, and the image that shows when someone shares your page.
Trying changes safely. Wix's Test Site lets you show changes to a share of your visitors before you publish them to everyone. Tropic Arts gives you sandbox copies of your site (two on Starter, five on Store), so you can rework pages on a copy and apply them to the live site when they're ready.
Backups. Wix's site history lets you restore an earlier version of your site yourself, but a restore doesn't roll back app content such as your store, blog or bookings. Tropic Arts backs up every site daily, but there's no restore button: you ask us, and we restore it for you.
Privacy. Tropic Arts counts visits, page views, top pages, traffic sources and devices without cookies, on every plan, so your numbers are complete without asking visitors for consent. A cookie banner is built in for when you add Google Analytics or the Meta Pixel. Wix Analytics uses cookies, so if you show a consent banner, only visitors who accept are counted, and Wix estimates that's about half of them. Wix's own cookie banner is also no longer offered to new sites, which are pointed to a partner app from Usercentrics instead, free in its basic version.
Support. Wix offers support around the clock in English through callbacks, plus live chat on weekdays, and it has a large help center and community. Tropic Arts is a smaller team. Support is by email and our contact form, we reply within two business days, and you can write to us in any of more than 75 languages. If you want to reach someone by phone at any hour, Wix wins this one.
If you ever leave
Neither platform lets you pack up your design and move it to another host. Wix exports your contacts, physical products, orders and CMS content as CSV files, but not digital products or blog posts. Tropic Arts exports your products, customers, bookings, subscribers, reviews and form responses as spreadsheets, and your blog posts as a file you can keep. We don't export individual orders, though; the closest is a monthly sales-tax report. The design stays behind on both.
Moving from Wix to Tropic Arts
If you do decide to switch, most of the work is quicker than it sounds:
- Your pages. Wix doesn't export a site, so you'll rebuild on one of our templates. That's the job the AI builder was made for: give it your business details and it writes the pages, then paste in any wording from your Wix site you want to keep exactly.
- Your blog. Wix can't export blog posts, so copy across the ones you want to keep.
- Your products and contacts. Export them from Wix as CSV files and import them in your console. Our importer reads common column names such as name, price, SKU, inventory and email, so you may only need to rename a column or two to match our sample file. Wix exports physical products only, so add any digital products by hand.
- Your domain. Keep it. Connect it in your console, which recognizes when a domain's DNS is managed at Wix and walks you through the changes to make.
So which should you choose?
Choose Wix if you:
- want to design freely, down to where each element sits;
- need custom code, a specific app or an integration we don't offer;
- sell in person, on marketplaces or in more than one language;
- want to reach support by phone at any hour.
Choose Tropic Arts if you:
- want a complete, designer-made site, written for your business by AI;
- would like your store, bookings, email, customer list and mailbox in one console;
- want more included for a lower monthly price;
- want to be able to change templates later without starting over;
- are happy to work in sections instead of on a free-form canvas.
The easiest way to decide is to try it. Every Tropic Arts site starts on a free trial, with no card and no time limit. Pick a template, let the AI write it for your business, and compare the result with anything you've built on Wix. You only choose a plan when you're ready to go live, and our pricing page has the details.
Wix changes its plans often, so check anything that matters to you on Wix's own site before you decide. If you spot something here that's out of date, tell us and we'll fix it.
